TCOMS and Deltares sign memorandum of understanding for joint research and co-development of knowledge in the field of hydrodynamics

Singapore, 19th April 2022 – The Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore (TCOMS), and Deltares, an independent knowledge institute in the field of water and subsurface, headquartered in the Netherlands, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 19 April 2022 during the Singapore International Water Week. Both TCOMS and Deltares agree to share and exchange their knowledge and expertise, to further enhance capabilities in hydrodynamic modelling, for both deep-water and shallow-water scenarios, and contribute towards predictions of regional met-ocean conditions and coastal protection measures, especially adaptation solutions in response to climate change and sea-rising sea levels.

Professor Chan Eng Soon, CEO TCOMS: “The agreement marks the start of an exciting partnership with Deltares to co-create cutting edge capabilities in hydrodynamic modelling and knowledge of coastal fluid-structure interactions.  This will mutually strengthen our position as leading R&D institutes contributing towards coastal resilience solutions.”

Annemieke Nijhof, Managing Director Deltares: “Enriching our knowledge of the effects of climate change and climate adaptation is crucial. With this collaboration we are able to partner with a leading institute for larger projects and expand our knowledge about the Singapore and SE Asia region.”

The agreement is a first step towards a long-term collaboration between TCOMS and Deltares. The mutual sharing of knowledge, and conduct of joint projects and research to co-create innovative modeling and simulation solutions in the hydrodynamics field. The knowledge acquired through the collaboration will support the greater research eco-system including industry and public agencies.

The agreement was signed at the headquarters of TCOMS, in the presence of the Vice Minister for Water Management of the Netherlands, Michèle Blom, the Dutch ambassador for Singapore, Margriet Vonno, TCOMS Board Co-Chair and Assistant Chief Executive, Science & Engineering Research, Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Professor Alfred Huan as well as TCOMS Board Director and Assistant Chief Executive (Industry), Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, Mr Kenneth Lim.

About TCOMS

The Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore (TCOMS) is a national R&D centre dedicated to the Marine & Offshore, Maritime and other Ocean sectors. We integrate research and industry expertise to co-develop innovative future ocean systems and solutions that are safe, resilient and sustainable. A core feature of TCOMS is the next-generation Deepwater Ocean Basin research facility which is equipped with advanced wave and current generation systems to simulate challenging ocean environments that marine platforms and ships operate in. TCOMS is also supported by the petascale supercomputing capabilities of the National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) Singapore. These allow our researchers to evolve coupled numerical-physical modelling and simulation capabilities that can recreate complex operating scenarios, so as to help companies enhance the design and performance of their solutions. TCOMS is a joint venture between the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the National University of Singapore (NUS).

About Deltares

Deltares is an independent knowledge institute for applied research in the field of water and subsurface. Throughout the world, we work on smart solutions, innovations and applications for people, environment and society. From the perspective of water, the subsurface and infrastructure, we will be working on four Mission Areas in which we set out our contributions to the international and Dutch agendas and tasks: Future deltas, Sustainable deltas, Safe deltas and Resilient infrastructure. Managing densely populated and vulnerable areas is complex, which is why we work closely with governments, businesses, other research institutes, universities and NGO’s at home and abroad.
